Biomedical Informatics and Database Management

KEVRIC's specialists bring a high level of Information Technology expertise to the development and support of specialized databases in the health and environmental sciences. Our products feature user-friendly PC-based platforms, customized report capabilities, complete user support and training, and technical documentation, including operation and training manuals.

KEVRIC assists the National Institutes of Health's National Library of Medicine (NIH/NLM) with the Unified Medical Language System (UMLS)® Knowledge Source by providing professional reviews of medical, pharmacological, biological, and chemical concepts. The project involves comprehensive editing of an academic database system, including indexing and mapping.

KEVRIC provides the National Cancer Institute (NCI) with Scientific Information System Coding Engine (SISCE) data development and editing. Working closely with all participants, KEVRIC facilitates knowledge retrieval through this integrated information resource proactively designed to meet the needs of cancer researchers and managers. The system is based on an Aristotelian hierarchy designed to foster complex yet logical interrelationships between biomedical terms. KEVRIC reviews, modifies, and integrates codes from existing NCI management, laboratory, and program electronic vocabularies. KEVRIC also adds cancer-related biomedical vocabulary terms to areas currently underrepresented in the National Library of Medicine's thesaurus of Medical Subject Headings (MeSH). KEVRIC provides an incremental application of Aristotelian logic and hierarchical principles to the creation and modification of SISCE vocabulary items.

For the CDC Information Systems Support Services (CISSS) Group, KEVRIC provides health statistics through data extraction from Superfund National Priorities List (NPL) site reports to maintain a national hazardous material (HazDat) database. KEVRIC provides training and maintenance of HazDat abstraction procedures, implements a quality assurance program, performs data quality control audits and edits, and abstracts pertinent information from public health assessments, consultations, and advisories.
